Help in informing

First I want to say Hello and to Thank anyone who replies.  I have no idea on how to inform my son that his dreams and hard work has been, from now on anyway, is fruitless.   How do you tell your 14 year old son that he will no longer be able to play his favorite sport?  My son was diagnosed as a incidental finding of an 8mm Chiari malformation type 1.  This was a routine MRI, so we thought, after a concussion.  There are only three things this child cares about. 1) Football, 2) Football, and 3) Competitive target shooting.  I feel so bad for him.  All he has every dreamed about since he was nine was to play in the NFL.  Now, how do you tell him that he won't even have a chance too?

Good luck Tuesday, please keep us posted.

The Dr may tell ur DS  if he feels he needs to avoid certain activities, and if this is a true chiari specialist he will.

I know of a few that went back to "life as normal" that they did b4 their dx and they all tend to have set backs...it is not worth going thru a risky surgery to put it all at risk again...we have to adapt and alter what we do to continue to feel better.

I pray ur DS figures that out for himself

I knot it isn't good news to absorb.  I was 45 yr hearing the new's of Chairi, so your son being so yourng will be much harder, but he will also be more flexibly and knowing he has a different direction he must go.  Right now it is just keeping him healthy.  I'm sure your son being so young he won't understand the seriousness of having chairi.  Hoping the dc. will explain this to him.  We are all here and you are in my prayer's.  Just stay strong.  It's your best defense ( little football humor).  Have a good day.  I'll be thinking of u Tues.

Thank you Selma for your kind words.  I have always stressed the importance of a back up plan to my son.  I always believed that they can take away everything that you have except for your dreams.  So this is why it is so hard for me to find the words to inform him.  He knows the importance of school.  Especially, after I held him out of not only practice's but game's as well, due to either his homework not being complete or a bad grade.  He has been playing since he was nine years old.  I am not a parent that lives thier life through thier kids eyes.  I have never pushed any of my kids into sports.  The only thing that I did do was to make them finish whatever they started.  He lives and breathes football.  He is already training for next year.  I just hope that he can handle the news and that I can find the correct way to inform him.  He has an appointment with the Ped Surgeon coming up and I guess we will see what occurs from this.  Thank you again for letting me vent and your kind words.

I can't inmagine having to tell my son this.  I know what you mean about your son.  I have a son that lived, breathed football, sport's in general.  I love how Selma explain's thing's though.  This is just a different journey that your son will have to take, but I also know and feel your pain of letting your son know that has dream's has changed.  I know playing football would be a no no having Chairi.  I wish you the best.  Hearing what kind of dad you are it sound's like you won't have any problems explaing this to your son.  I wish you the best.  Keep us updated.  Your in my prayer's.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

I am so sorry that u have to tell ur child about this, and that his dream has to shift to something else...but, it could be something to do with the NFL....who knows....

May I ask, did ur son does ur son have symptoms?

If so what are they?....do u have a chiari specialist?

Chiari is life altering and regardless of what we may have planed for ourselves, life has a way of giving us detours....

Tell ur son regardless if he had this or not he would need a back up plan as football players get injured all the time....and he would have to have a way to support himself for that time or when age catches up.

I pray u find the words to comfort him and guide him to where he is destined to go.
