How you know you need a new doc!

I went to a new neurologist today. (My old one is moving toward a different specialty area.) The very first thing this doc said "So I read you have Chiari and had two surgeries. Why would you have surgery?" I should have immediately ran out of there as though I were on fire!!! He said that it's very uncommon for people to have surgery and he has never seen anyone that has needed it. OH.MY. My first clue that he was too out of the loop should have been the bow-tie he was wearing, as it was older than me!

He did, however, try to resolve the ringing in my ears issue by a medication to increase circulation. Theory is to supply the tiny capillaries in my inner (and middle) ear. So I'll try that, but I'm already searching for someone who didn't graduate medical school in 1967 and does not have the old Chiari standards!!! Yikes!

I hope to have provided a humorous narrative as a means to educate on how to know when you need a new NL! :)

We all have to look at the History of the MRI-
While the science behind MRI has been around since the 1930s, MRI was not used for medical purposes until the 1970s. The device was first patented in 1974 by New York City doctor Raymond Damadian. Dr. Damadian figured out how to use this technology to differentiate between healthy and cancerous cells. In 1977, his MRI device weighed 1.5 tons and was 10 feet high!
Over the past 30 years, MRI has proven to be highly effective in diagnosing a number of conditions such as tumors, internal bleeding and blood vessel diseases, soft tissue injuries and infection. During that time, manufacturers have innovated new technologies to improve image acquisition, reduce exposure and provide patients with the best diagnostic images available to show the difference between normal and diseased soft tissues of the body. This includes blood vessels and breasts, as well as organs in the pelvis, chest and abdomen (heart, liver, kidney and spleen).{http://www.medicalimaging.org/2011/05/17/nyt-documents-history-of-mri/]

The first MRI device for a full body scan was built by 1977. Dr. Damadian named it the "Indomitable." You can see it when you visit the Smithsonian Institute. The first MRI examination was performed on July 3, 1977. The next year was when Dr. Damadian started the FONAR Corporation. The first commercially available MRI machines were for sale by 1980.

SO if they were only just beginning to be available in the 1980's u know they were not used for someone that had an ache or pain or head ache....and were very expensive...the only way to dx chiari is with a MRI.....so b4 this Chiari was seen in people during an autopsy .....so, they concluded people could live with these and it was of no consequence.

This is still relativity new and this is y chiari, true chiari specialists r the better Drs to go to as they r the front runners of research on it......not all Drs feel the same as it was what was taught at the med school they went to and they go by what they were taught and what was in the books at the time.....just think all they r learning now with the advent of this technology....yes they see it is there, but now how do they know if or how it will affect us?

I was going to Drs long b4 they started making MRI's.....so, it has been a long road, but to get a dx and expect they know what to do about it is yet another battle we must wager......

I always say read the story of Luis Pasteur to see how he was criticized by colleges and   no one had faith in him.....but look where he took us <3

Sexybare- It's oe thing if he wouldn't know about it and tell me so. But it makes it worse when he goes in there, unprepared for me and pretends that he has the situation under control. I would have been more than happy if he would have told me that he didn't know, but would find out! How impressed I would have been if he would have tried to go the extra mile!!

Thanks Selma! Very interesting! I think I'll just have to do some extensive research on my docs before I make an appointment! haha

I have an appt with a NS in Dallas next week. I did not like the NL I went to. Am I going to have to be followed by a NL? My daughter had Guillian-Barre and we had a horrible time finding a Pedi-NL for her. I dread searching for a NL..can't I just stick with the NS search, since NL's don't really treat Chiari?

It was my decision to go back to my NL. I have a wonderful NS, but he is more interested in major issues that affect me. He did not address the issues of the ringing in my ears and he told me sometimes people just have it indefinitely. I also have pain and would like to try treatment other than just narcotics. He has a "wait and see" approach, which I like when considering surgery, but he didn't want to explore the other "smaller" issues. I also wanted someone else's opinion of what was going on and how to fix it. He is a wonderful surgeon, but his strength is not in pain management.
