My neurosurgeon warned me that I might wake from surgery with severe nausea, because the brain stem contains the center responsible for nausea, and since our cerebral tonsils and brain stems are essentially fused before surgery, separating them can sometimes result in stimulation of that center. They gave me zofran and it worked like a charm. Good luck with getting your insurance to cover it outside of the hospital though! my insurance paid for brain surgery but refused a $90 anti-nausea medication!
WOW, that is very soon to be off pain meds....and even tho she seems ok now, do not be surprised if she begins to have pain again.....
Glad the nausea stopped.
I took my daughter off Zoloft when we left the hospital to isolate what was making her nauseous. We then took her off the pain meds when she got home and was still getting nauseous. We gave her over the counter Tylenol. Nausea stopped and everything is moving forward in a positive direction. We are on day 7 since surgery. Thank you to those that responed to my question.
I have had severe nausea after I eat since surgery... Both before and after my csf leak developed. Zofran is very helpful and not lying flat after I eat and only eating a small amount at a time has helped tremendously. I would definitely call the doc to see if the can help with this
Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.
There are many reasons, meds can be at the top of the list as this was an issue for me......what pain meds is she on....
When does she have this issue, laying down, after sitting up....after eating, after meds...???
A CSF leak is another possibility but she most likely would have more issues then nausea...
It does take time for all the drugs used for surgery.....
How long is she home?
Maybe her doctor could give her anu RX for Zofran? Not sure about age limitations.
