Disability Insurance Questions

I have my surgery scheduled for the end of January and I am wondering how disability insurance will work.

I am in California so I will get about 55% of my annual salary divided weekly and paid out.  I calculate that to be about $1900 a month, which is about $1100 a month less then I make every month.  My work also has short term disability insurance, which I interpret as a supplemental insurance.

I talked to our HR rep and he said he is not very familiar with how these benefits work and would need to get back to me on compensation.  At first he made it seem like I would get one or the other, but I interpret it to mean that the employee paid group short term disability insurance will pay a percentage of my salary in addition to the SDI to make up for lost wages…

So let’s say I get 55% for SDI, then the short term disability insurance through my work would pay say, 45% to make up the difference so I get as close to my normal monthly paycheck as possible…is this right?

What do you all think?  If I am really going to be out $1100 a month I need to do some serious planning.

Thanks!!!

oooooooo, ok....how many days do u get from work?......and do u have an approx amount of time u will be out?

wow, my employer would never combine sick and vaca together....lol...it appears the same, but it was so complicated...how many yrs of service, # of hrs worked the previous yr...all to calculate pay!!....ne way it was either sick pay, vaca pay, or pd personal......like I said it was a complicated system they had in place.

Oh, sorry...PTO is Paid Time Off, sick and vacation are combined into one poll to be used as needed.  I was going to use PTO for my two days I was taking before surgery, one if for a doctors visit and the other is the day before surgery to prepare for the hospital stay.

With all the doctor appointments I have been taking, I only have 20 hours of PTO and I have two days I am taking off prior to the surgery...

I will be using FMLA and State Disability Insurance with possibly Short Term Disability Insurance provided by my work, or which ever is best...

Hi Kim, I was HR till I was seperated from employment this past July....however I am not aware of how things r outside of my state or employer.
If ur state allows u to get both, u may....some may provide the option for the employers to choose to offer it , but if there is something else available...then u may only get one!!

Case in point...I used all my short term disability from work.....then was facing looseing my job and no income....I had signed up for LTD and looked into that....if u r getting SSID u will not get the full payment of the LTD...so I did not apply for the SSID....I deceided that after the LTD was exhausted I would look into SSID only if I still needed it.

Joy was also a HR, I believe she may have  a bit more experience than me on this...she may answer this .

Good luck
Godspeed
