selmaS, as always...thank you for the information. My Neurosurgeon performs about 1 decompression surgery a month. He said it's a minor procedure and unnecessary unless my Chiari has major obstruction and debilitating symptoms. It always seems to be the doctors perception of how we feel. If we don't get wheeled in on a gurney or wheelchair, then it's not a problem.  UGGHHH!

Hi, I agree it would be great to get all this info from our Drs, but there are so few that seem to know about or believe how these conditions do affect us.

As for a syrinx when there is no visible CSF obstruction ( from cerebral tonsils) that can occur from an injury to the area where the syrinx is....a MVA...a blow to the head, neck etc....this can even be a result of using forceps during birth.

As for a NS head of a neuro dept in a hospital doesn't mean jack to me, it is if they have Chiari experience and do research, if not he is no better then ne other NS at ne hospital, be it there under him...this is y we research the Drs to see what their knowledge and experience with Chiari is not neurosurgery,,,,or neuro science in general, we want specially to specialize in Chiari and related conditions.

Kim I pray u find the right Dr and have a wonderful New Year ahead.

Hi selmaS. I know some of these questions are better asked of the doctor, but when they don't take it seriously, it's nice to have all of you to turn to.

I was wondering if you know how a syrinx is formed if there is no CSF obstruction? Although my syrinx in only 3 mm, I don't have a CSF obstruction according to my CINE MRI. Of course my Neurosurgeon, who is the head head Neurosurgeon at a well known hospital, doesn't think my Chiari and syrinx are an issue. I'm just curious how a syrinx is formed without the obstruction.

Thank you. I hope you are feeling better and have a wonderful holiday!

Yes, if u have a CSF obstruction u would run a higher risk of developing a syrinx.....I had an obstruction and surgery was suggested to restore flow and to help prevent the formation of a syrinx.
