RISKS

I understand that there are risks to having any surgery.  I am scheduled for surgery next Wednesday and am riding a wave of emotions right now.  My sister in law had a brain tumor removed in 2006 and she had a brain stem stroke as a result.

My family is somewhat apprehensive for me to have surgery after my sis in laws result.  I said before I had my diagnosis that I would have surgery even if I had a 50% chance of reliving any of these symptoms and now, from what I have read, the success rate is even higher than that...I will be 41 years old in November and I cant imagine not taking the chance of having a better quality of life...so, my question is...

Has anyone heard of or expereinced a traumatic result such a stroke from having a posterior foss decompression?  I feel I have done the research, have had my questions answered, and I am ready, but I would just like to be able to comfort my family some and get off this rollercoaster of emotions!!

Thanks to all
Amy

Hi,
Surgery is about risks and necessity  V  restoring quality of life and preventing degeneration of your illness. I am not a medical person but I am a patent with CM/SM and so have a vested interest in same.
There are some risks involved but they are more from post opp infections than the opp itself as far as I can judge from researching the whole CM thing. With a tumour there is usually blood supply via veins ect to the tumour site. This can leas to a CVA (cardio vascular accident) where a blood vessel bursts. I honestly don’t know if this is a risk with your surgery.
I would suggest that you and a member of your family sit down with the NS or one of there team and discuss this. Have a list of questions you wish to raise and do so. This way it is not just your assessment and views that your family will hear but the views of a family member who is impartial and not so emotionally involved as you are.
It is easy for me to say this….so I will….worry will not help you, knowledge will.

I hope and pray that you find the answers you need and that your surgery will be a success. They would not even conceder you for surgery if they thought there was any risk or at least they would inform you of risks if there were any.

HI Amy,

I am not aware of ne except for one member had a TIA...which is a mini stroke, but it was determined to be a result of her HRT and not the decompression...it was just that it was during her recovery that she experienced it.

Everyone is different and we can not say it doesn't or won't happen.....the best thing u can do is know ur dr.....and if u trust ur dr u will enter the OR with the confidence and adittude to come thru will flying colors.....if not u could bring an adverse result on urself.

So, if u r confident in ur dr relax and be positive : )
