migraine with aura

I have migraine with aura since i was a kid. Now i just found out i have Chiari 1. Does anyone else experience these migraine aura with their Chiari symptoms. Im afraid im going to lose my job over this disorder. Does anyone know if this means i will have to go on disability? I feel like theres no hope. Does Topamax work for this? I see a neurologist on Thursday. Hope I get some insight!

Yes I have migraine with aura also. Every few months. Last year I had a string of about 10 in 3 months 3 of them happening in 30 hours. I still work. I am not on topamax and have only heard bad things about it so i stick to the generic pain killers

Because Chiari can affect many of the bodies functions we do need to also look at our families medical history...such as anyone with heart issues....

IE- I had heart palps and my dad has heart issues so I went and had an EKG to make sure my heart was ok....so if you have family history and are having an issue go to a heart Dr for testing to make sure your heart is ok...

I can not say yes Chiari can cause a stroke but if you are more likely to suffer one Chiari may trigger it to happen sooner ....

I don't have a Chiari specialist yet but I'm doing research. Does anyone know if Chiari causes stroke? I'm afraid of this! My MRI said there was nothing like this going on though.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

Not all of us will experience the symptoms the same.....I myself have not had the aura's....

Disability is not easy to get with a DX of just Chiari...there is a thread for tips on winning SSID.....but it can take up to 2 yrs or more and the help of an attorney.

TOPAMAX will change the type of HA you have...but it takes time to adjust to the meds....while on it I honestly didn't think it was helping as you can feel worse when first starting on it.....but there is an approx 2 week adjustment period....so be patient with it and wait to see how it works for you.

Do you have a true Chiari specialist?
