reaction to dura patch

My daughter had decompression surgery 4 years ago. After surgery her stitches kept popping out. She had extreme pain th NS said that would pass. Nine months later developes rash on right side of face.  The skin is bright red peels  and looks like shingles.  Been to every DR. it went away after 5 months . # months later extreme pain in incision area NS goes in removes stitches there is infection. Last year Feb 2010 redo surgery again. One week later rash .  It goes away in July.  We haother hospitals ve been to top hospitals in NY where surgery was done.and  Drs in Philly NJetc. We have seen many ID Derm   Nurologists. She is now almost sixteen. She is very bright and missing school home tutors come to house because of this extremely painful rash. Her right eye is also closed due to the nerve. She is has many allergies including latex. WE found a great DR who feels this is a reaction to patch. Has anyone had this? She wants to get her life back. She wont leave the house because of rash.  PLease let me know. Surgery is what is next. Hopfully this will work.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

As Pam asked , Ehlers-Danlos could play a part in this...may I ask what type of patch ur DD received?

I have EDS my own skin was used to help avoid rejection...and glue and sterri strips no staples and no stitches were used either...I did not have the issues ur poor DD r having......

The infection is a big indication that rejection was a possibility.

May we ask where she went for her original care?.....and who she is going to now?

We r happy to have u join us, sorry for the reasons that bring u.

Hello and wecome!  I am so sorry your DD is going thru all this.  Just a question.  Has your DD been checked for Ehlers Danlos?  It is a autoimmune collagen disorder that can affect healing.  I am not a doctor but when you mentioned  the stitches popping out that is the first thing that came to mind. I have read it is like sewing butter.  Alot of the members here who have it had to have glue and no stitches.  Could possibly have caused the rejection of the patch too.  Google it and see if any of the other symptoms fit.  Just an idea!

I hope you find the answers you need!
