This was my very first symptom that started me on my 10 or so year journey.. I had the barium swallow test and everything was fine. An endoscopy showed a slight case of GERD but no medication for that ever helped.. I recently had surgery and that was one of the first things I noticed was gone, but Im only 3 weeks into recovery..Staying away from caffeine when I could helped, but I never did get rid of that excessive saliva feeling until now
Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.
I am not sure if u have chiari as u did not give us that history, and if u do that may account for ur gaging....and reflux issues.
'
If u do not have chiari u may want to see a GI dr to determine the root cause of ur reflux...it is possible that u have a hiatal hernia or some other issue that needs to be addressed.Even a ENT may be able to ***** whether or not ur issue is post nasal drip, it can cause the gaging as well as reflux.
Many that have chiari have both these issues...as well as an autoimmue thyroid issue which may have a part in this as well.
I hope u r willing to share a bit more of ur info, and we r here to share our experiences.....

i have acid reflux/gerd too and had a huge problem with choking/gagging prior to my surgery. while i still have reflux and an absent gag reflex, i have not had a problem with the gagging since surgery! i take nexium once a day and it works great for me!
I have been having alot of issues with swallowing and food getting stuck in my throat or not going down my esophagus and getting stuck substernally. Is this what is happening? When that happens I have to gag to get it back up since it feels like I cant breath. If so drinking lots of liquid when you eat to wash down every bite helps. A hard swallow with your chin to your chest can help too. The doc says I have an absent gag reflex sounds like yours maybe hyper sensitive? Not sure. I hope this helps a little. Hopefully Selma will have more ideas for you.

Hi,
Sorry you are gagging. I know this is sometimes a common side effect of CM1.
I do not have that problem but I do have the excess saliva. especially at night. I have also noticed that when I start to salivate alot my speech also starts to get slurred and my cognitive abilities go down the tube!!
Not sure how much help I was, but I thought I might share for comparison.
