Crying 6 year old....

My 6 year old son, cries for no apparent reason when he is at school. example, they pack up at the end of the day, if his bag is not packed in time, he cries. The teacher gives him a task, and while he is busy, she attends to other kids. If he struggles with the task, he will cry. If he plays after school sports at school, if he feels he cannot cope, he cries and gets one of the parents to call home for his mom to fetch him. He will sit in front of a pc at home, and if he struggles playing a game, he will cry. If he leaves school and my wife is not outside waiting for him, and he cannot see her, he will cry. We dont know what else to do to help him.....

I have a bit of a different take on this.  Does your son have some issues with any fine motor things (scissors, pencil grip, writing his letters)---------  does he have trouble with new tasks?  I would find out why he is having issues such as that.  Some kids do have issues with their nervous system that make regulation of emotions very challenging.

Agree that working on some other strategies would be helpful so that he can cope better.  I'd role play scenarios that he becomes upset at and come up with alternatives.

But crying is a release of emotion.  You need to find out why he has the emotion.  Telling a child to "just not cry or quit your crying" will backfire.  Find out the why's of the problem and offer alternatives.

In the past when he cries is he getting help with his task?  When he cries at a game, does your wife come and fetch him?  If he doesn't have any other issues, he just needs to be taught some coping skills.  Crying in my opinion is not a coping skill.  At 6 he really shouldn't be crying unless he is hurt. (physically or emotionally)
