3 year old Social behavior

Hi, we have a 3 year old son that is very on track as far as motor, thinking, emotional skills.  One area that has been slow for him has been developing social skills.  Up untill he was 2 1/2 he didn't have any day to day interaction with other kids on a daily basis so he spend majority of his day with grandparents.  Everytime we go to a birthday party of cousines and friends, he has a hard time adjusting.  In the car he will ask me if there is any other kids there and then if I say yes, he will say he does not want to go the the party.  When we get there, it takes a good 15-20 minutes to go inside.  Then when we're inside, he will not associate with other kids, he will find a quiet corner and will start playing but always wants me near him.  He just started preschool in the last week and is liking it very much, however still does not really socialize with the other kids in class, however he likes the fact that they're there and will speak of them.  His first cousins also moved here recently from another state and he plays with them just fine once they got confortable with eachother.  Do we have anything to worry about or is this just normal development.  Please advise.

I don't think you have anything to worry about either.  I would make it a point to keep him social----  set up playdates and get him out of the house to go to parks and places other kids are at.  Cultivating a social life for our kids is something we should make time for as the benefits are many.  Good luck!  He may be a little shy at first which is okay but will be just fine once he warms up to people. By the way, birthday parties are notoriously hard for many kids!
