Needing constant approval

I need to know how to cope with a 6.5 yr old girl who has to show me every detail of something she's working on.  For instance, if she's drawing a clown, she'll say "I'm going to draw his face," then goes to draw the face (in her room on her desk).  Then it's the nose...she leaves again, then the eyes...she leaves again, then the fingers, then the shoes.  It's not that I don't spend time with her or even sit down to watch her draw , but this happens when we're not with her and she's working from her room.  It seems she can't do anything without showing us every detail.  It's the same on the computer....look at this....look at this every 5 seconds.  It's disturbing and I wonder how normal this is.She's a very bright child and we give her lots of reinforcement otherwise.  But how do I/we  cope with this constant need of approval??

I assume by your handle you are a new mom again, your daughter is feeling left out and she is demanding your attention, you may think you give it but how long for is it only a quick answer or do you give quite a bit of your time, when another child comes along the older ones get put back down the line of prority for attention and feel left out . I would say when you have spare time give her extra quality moments Reading , playing, Talking Walking,so she has just you no other kids or babies, let Dad do the same.

You're dealing with anxiety.  I might suggest you google the phrase "childhood anxiety" or something similar to find information on dealing with this issue.  It won't go away over night, but your daughter's self-esteem can be heightened with intervention ideas.  By the way, is your daughter extremely "sensitive"?  If she is, I might suggest a book written by Elaine N. Aron titled "the highly sensitive child" which deals with this topic as well as with anxiety issues.  I wish you the best ...
