Normal Five Year Old Behavior?

My son is five years old and showed his Kindergarten teacher his new underwear he was very excited about. He also showed his friend's dad who was helping out with the boys bathroom usuage on their fieldtrip. His teacher said this was not "normal" for a five year old. Also on the field trip he had trouble sitting during the storyteller time. Her story was about 25 minutes long and her son was standing next to her playing and swinging around with a large stick. My son got up to "play" with him and see his stick. He went back to his seat when asked. After the second time he got up, I had him sit on my lap and then he stayed put. This story time was after a  30 minute busride and then sitting for snacktime for about 20 minutes.   Is it unusual for a child this age?

hi,

Just a comment on the underwear, my son recenlty got some new power rangers underwear he was very proud of, and showed it to the entire family, over and over again! He refrianed fro showing anybody out side the family as he is quite shy about that sort of thing around strangers, but he told them all about his new pants!

Before my son was born, I was a daycare assistant. Let me tell you, for some reason little kids get really excited about new 'cartoon character' underwear etc. I have lost count of the number of times I have had to pretend to be interressted when a child was going on an on (and on!) about a new pair of barbie/x men underwear, or showing them to me when I accompainied them to the bathrooms. I would sometimes mention it to a parent in passing, to let them know of an amusing thing thier child had done that day, how cute it was that they reallt loved their new item of clothing etc, but I would never have said it wasnt normal. IMHO, totally normal behaviour!

Also, 25mins is a long time for a 5 year old to keep their attention focused, unless they were really 'in' to the story, especially after a bus ride and then sitting still for snack. They should have been allowed to run around and let off a little steam first. And hey, if the story tellers kid was standing up swining a stick around, you cant blame other kids for thinking its ok to join in!
