One year update

It has been a year since my English Setter of 8 years of age was diagnosed with CKD. His numbers have remained steady with creatinine of between 2.5-2.9 and BUN of 50-60. Last year at this point I was very anxious indeed. He eats well and even hunted with vigor this past winter.

I am having trouble navigating the website and had to re-register.

Best Robert

Hi again. Sorry to hear about your new pup. Yes, dogs can be very expensive. I have both of ours insured for medical treatments other than routine things, but even that's not cheap anymore. Your Setter has done really well though, just on the diet alone. He must be a real fighter and his immune system and general health must be in really good shape.

Tony, thanks. The only treatment has been his diet. He is getting the Hill's KD food, both canned and dried. In addition, he gets about 2 oz of cooked chicken, an egg white, and a couple of baked potatoes each day. I am feeding him 4 times a day.

That is about it. He definitely was in decline when first diagnosed last Spring on this very date. His weight now is holding steady. His hemoglobin levels have also improved.

I feel thankful. I bought a new pup in Nov. Unfortunately, he himself has had some health problems, including major emergency surgery for an obstruction in his gut. So it has been an expensive year or two. I think I have spent almost 8k on three dogs in vet bills in the last two years. Best wishes, Robert

Hi Robert. That's great news. Glad you're back with us and it's nice to hear from you. You have clearly had great success in keeping his numbers down and, as he's eating well and clearly has lots of energy, whatever you're doing is working to maintain the kidney disease at a stasis level. Could you let us know what treatments he's been having along with the diet you are giving him? This may be helpful to others.

Thanks again.
