Do I need Oxygen

I was told my Docotor that I have copd. Along with that i also have congestive heart failure. I recently had some pulmonary function tests. I got some of the results back and am waiting for the rest. My PO2 was 70.3. Normall valuse are between 80-100. I was told my the technician that I won't be able to get Oxygen becuase I have to be at 60 or lower for the Insurance Company to pay. I have been very short of breath latley. My breathing is getting worse. I use inhalers, however, they are not hellping that much. I am also extremely fatigued. As an example I was in bed all day today and that is happening more often these days. My question is this. With that lower level of PO2 would the symptoms I have mentioned be consitent with that level? Also, could this also be exasterbated by the CHF? Finally is it true what the technician and another Doctor said that I could benefited form Oxygen but I will not be able to get it because of Medicare and other insurance parameters?

I am not a Dr either. Are they asking you for a O2 sat of 60% to cover with medicare? If so, I think I would seek legal help and/or get another Dr opinion. That in my opinion is ludicrous!  I would seek out more options don't give up that's crazy!!!!!  Caring in Az

I,  like Teko am not a doctor, I am also a 56 year old female and have moderate emphysema.  Unlike Teko, my symptoms seem to be far advanced of hers.  There is absolutely no way I could do cleaning and be around those chemicals.  My point is, each person is an individual and symptoms and limitations will be different with each person.  My private insurance did allow me oxygen at 80%.  I generally only use it at night, but have used it days when symptoms warranted.  I am triggered by enviornment, pollens, smog, can't be around a wood burning fireplace, etc.  I guess I am somewhat discouraged by Teko's funtioning level as it sounds we are at about the same stage.  Anyway, I would recommend you check with Medicare.  Sounds to me that you might benefit from some oxygen therapy to improve your life.  They may pay for a portion of it.  The oxygen company I work with, I think after one year, considers the equipment mine and thy still service for me once a year.  Good luck to you and hope you get the answers that you need.

I am not a doctor, but if my recollection serves me right on what I have read, the symptoms you describe could be either or.  Both conditions cause the symptoms you speak of.  I also was diagnosed with emphysema , moderate range about 2 months ago. This is what I was told by the pulmonologist.

I seem to have symptoms only on exertion and am very active, as I have my own cleaning business.  He said to make sure I stay as active as I can to keep my chest muscles, lungs in best working order possible, get flue and pneumonia shot and stay away from sick people.  I am on advair 250/50 twice daily and a rescue inhaler (which I have not needed). He also noted that the longer I can stay off oxygen the longer my lifespan.  You may want to research that note for yourself.  I am 56 year old female and quit smoking upon diagnosis (the one thing that will slow progression)of the disease but if i continue to smoke all bets are off.

He also said that he has patients walking into his office at 20% lung capacity. I found that encouraging.  I also know from research that emphysema can cause other organ breakdown and result also in congestive heart failure.  Have you checked into any surgical options?
