Used expired medicine

So before checking the date, I took one dose of chloraseptic spray that expired eight years ago. It didn't really work at all, but is that the only problem I face? Could there be any problems that arise from taking that type of medicine that long after its date?

Thanks.

my information was true.....
and about antibiotics if expired as u said it will lead to resistance really ,but this according to the studies is not considered as a direct hazard....
so as i said ..direct health hazards only occure in about 1 %

Ok, well, nothing happened to me and it's been about 24 hours, so I guess it was ok. Yes, it was quite nasty - the reason I checked the date after the use.

Thanks.

The information provided by ramy6338766 in regards to expired medication "in general" is inappropriate.

Cloraseptic is a "special case". You won't have any life-threatening problems.

In the case of other medications, that may not be the case. As case in point, use of expired antibiotics may result in you developing an anti-biotic resistant infection due to the degradation of effectiveness.

Ewww, that must have tasted NASTY.

Aside from not working, have you had any symptoms of other issues?  Bleeding, nasty smell or taste, pain, headache, nausea, vomitting?  If you haven't had any other symptoms, I wouldn't worry too much. Chloraseptic isn't swallowed normally, it's just topically applied.  Absorption is minimal.

If you start feeling weird or gross, you can call Poison Control, and they'll be able to let you know exactly what to do.

Good luck and take care!
