Forgot to answer one of your questions. LVH stands for: Left Ventricular Hypertrophy. This means that there is an area in the left ventricle (lower pumping chamber of the heart) that's wall is slightly thickened. This disease is also referred to as HCM, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, HOCM which stands for Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy, and IHSS which is an older abbreviation for Idiopathic Hypertrophic Subaortic Stenosis. The actual breakdown of the words are: Hypertrophic: thickened, Cardio: heart and Myopathy: muscle disease.
Idiopathic means; of unknown origin
Subarotic: Below the atrium, in other words, comes out of the ventricle
Stenosis: narrowing
Hope this helps
This is really a loaded question. HCM can be caused by hypertension; it can also be genetic, which means all of the family member should be tested for this disease, or it can be sporatic. Usually Calcium channel blockers are the drugs given to help relax the ventricular muscle. An EP Study should be done to rule out any problems with the electrical tract as well as any arrhythmia problems. Because sudden death sometimes occurs (about 2%) heavy type sports such as football, basketball, running, soccor things like that should be avoided. You should be followed up by a good cardiologist and a good medical facility who understands the disease and how to treat it. Heart transplantation is sometimes the only option if the disease is very bad. Myectomy is sometimes done if there is a blockage of blood flow..

Concentric left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) refers to the mild thickening of the ventricle. The most common cause for LVH is hypertention. This is due to the increased work for the heart leading to a slight thickening of the muscle.
