Nutritional supplements and Colitis

Hello,

Does anyone know if it is beneficial to take nutritional supplements (Protein) during /after colitis flare ups?  My GI specialist says that it is okay however I have read and heard from other colitis patients that it is not good.

I currently take a 100% egg protein that is lactose free.  It is hard to say if it causes irritation since there are times I take it and i'm fine and other times I feel a flare up.

Thanks for the advise. I have good days and bad days with the protein shakes.  I think i'm going to try the protein bars and see if it has the same effect.

I also take the vitamins and minerals but not sure if they are helping.  I'll keep taking them though.  Kaceyv, what meds do you take that slow your colon down?

I have UC. I take meds to slow down my colon then I drink nutrional drinks. And it works for me. I keep losing weight though. I hope I helped.

I tried drinking protien shakes once, and it seemed to make my UC worse then better, so I stopped.  I have not tried it in a pill form, but I have tried other supplements, such as, calcium, iron, vitamin D, and none of those worked either.

If your dr suggests to try it, I know that UC is very body specific, just because one thing does work for one person, dont mean that it wont work for another.

Hope that helps.  Feel better.
