my son who is 4

my son is 4 and for the last week or so has been going to the bathroom constantly he only complains of mild discomfort he is not however filling the toilet and it is not watery it is a little loose and narrow there is mucous in it and about 20 min ago i did notice a tinge of blood in the mucous most times when he goes its such a small amount and i ask him if he is sure hes done and everytime his answer is yes but 10 or 20 min later he is back in there a couple times i have noticed that it has floated but not every time it is very difficult to get him to describe any other pains or discomforts to me he does have respertory  problems from the time he was born he has had croup atleast 10 or so times and about 5 months ago he once again had croup went to doctor was treated and sent on our way but once croup was done he started sniffing and it was constant it was almost like he had to sniff because if he breathed to deep it triggerd a cough so the sniffing was almost like a persed breathing and that went on for about a month and a half untill i said enuff and called dr they didnt ask to see him just treated it like asthma and prescribed singlar wich he takes once daily and has truly helped he no longer sniffs or acts like he has a hard time breathing he calls the singlar magic lol however the last couple of days he is clearing his throat a lot and coughing a bit he has no fever has not been sick could these two things be related i am starting to worry if it were a stomach virus wouldnt he have more discomfort? please any information would be great

You are welcome. Please let me know what you find out. If the physician you see does not have an answer, take your son to another. In the end I had to so a lot of screaming to get a diagnosis for my mine.

I finally found this wonderfully kind and intelligent pediatric gastro who listened intently to my concerns as I cried in his office with frustration and fear. I will never forget that day. He laid his hand on my shoulder and said, "Mom let me do the worrying, you've carried this long enough. I will find out what's wrong with your son." And so he did.

My hope for you and your son is that you will find the same type of ped/gastro that I did. Best wishes,  Tuck

Hi Moosebug29,

My son had those very same symptoms almost from birth. They started as you describe you son's stools. I took him to physician after physician. They "guessed" and tested for everything from gluten digestive issues to celiac syndrome. He failed to thrive. And though he was almost 10 lbs at birth he was always in the 3-5% on the growth scale.

Finally at twelve he was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. He had a very tough and stressful adolescence as well as his high school years due to his disease. I am not saying that your son has Ulcerative Colitis but please make an appointment with a good pediatric gastroenterologist and get your son is asap. It may be helpful if you can take a stool sample with you on the day of your appointment. A sample that has the mucus and blood that you are referring to in your post.  But I would ask the clinic when you make the appointment.

If his bleeding continues or increases you may want to take the sample and him into ER. Good luck to you and your son. I know what you are experiencing and I encourage you to be active and assertive to find a diagnosis for your son.

Good luck and take care, Tuck
