is stomach distention a side effect of ulcerative colitis, what causes it and what can I do? I just got over my first flare-up, am eating everything and tolerating all foods well.

I have UC and may have Chron's... I find that if I eat raw veggies... particularly RGYO peppers, cuccumbers, kale, spinach, bok choy, ginger... it tend to feel better.  for the first little bit there is some gassyness but then as your body heals and can absorb more of the enzymes then your stool should be soft but bulky and easy to pass with little gas and cramping.  I usually put the above in quantities to taste in a blender and make a green smoothie out of it.... add apples, avicados, berries to sweeten it up and give some omegas into the mix... I have also found that with vit B12 injections I crave less meat and not having it in my body also helps me to feel lighter, less bloated and satisfied for longer.

There is also a link between Autoimmune bowel inflammitory diseases like UC, chron's and Celiac disease and Thyroid disease as it controls your immune system.  Often times UC can be irritated by foods with gluten...ie) breads, pastas and any product/sauce/spice that is manufactured or pre-packaged as it is a binding agent.

A good rule of thumb is to remember that nature provides us with everything we need to heal ourselves and by adopting the (if it doesn't grow in the ground or comes from a box, dont eat it )rule.  Start with rice and lightly stir-fried veggies, no cabage, broccoli or cauliflower in it or soy sauce ( or any sauce for that matter) Just saute onions and ginger breifly before putting veggies in and you wont even miss the sauce. do that for a week and then start introducing other foods one by one... keep a journal and you will soon find out what foods cause you to bloat more than others.  then all you have to do is AVOID THEM LIKE THEY WILL KILL YOU.
