Boy Scouts and sexual orientation

The Boy Scouts are "discussing potentially removing the national membership restriction regarding sexual orientation," according to Deron Smith, director of public relations for the Boy Scouts of America.

The Scouts' current policy denies membership to "individuals who are open or avowed homosexuals or who engage in behavior that would become a distraction to the mission of the BSA," the group's website says.

There are over 2.5 million youth members and over 1 million adult members nationwide, according to the BSA website

Who brings up sexual orientation at a scout meeting?  If you are bringing up sexual orientation at a scout meeting, you are officially not having a scout meeting.

As long as it doesn't become an "open invitation" to discuss matter of sexuality, at the meetings, in the literature, etc, then it's a good thing.

I've never been against gay/lesbian involvement in scouting... just the open discussion of the topic with the boys/young men.

Matters of sexuality have no place, for discussion, in the BSA movement.

Be gay. Be a lesbian. Be heterosexual. Fine. Just don't talk about it at the meetings, or otherwise.

We live in a changing world and if they want to be relevant, I think the sooner they realize that, the better for all concerned. imo

It'll be interesting to see what happens.  I know some of the local yahoo's around here are going to be up in arms about even discussing this.  Almost glad our meeting got cancelled tonight.
