American Doctor back in Hospital

An American patient treated for Ebola in Nebraska and then released is now in isolation in a hospital in Massachusetts.
Dr. Richard Sacra went to an emergency room early Saturday in Boston with a cough and fever, according to the missionary organization Serving in Mission. He was afraid he might have pneumonia.
Because of his previous infection, he was transferred to the UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, the center said in a statement.
Doctors there don't believe his symptoms point to a recurrence of Ebola but instead a respiratory infection. But they are keeping Sacra in isolation in accordance with guidelines from the CDC until the health institute gives the all-clear.
"We're waiting for final test results from the CDC, which we expect to receive late Monday," said lead physician Dr. Robert Finberg.
Sacra had worked as a medical missionary in Liberia but not directly with Ebola patients. Nevertheless, he contracted the disease. He was treated in isolation at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha and then released after testing negative for the virus.

This is wonderful news.  I am glad, it is probably just that his immune system is compromised from the ebola so he will catch colds that are going around.

Thank you for sharing.  Dee

I agree with Special Mom, quarantine

I agree. The CDC position is that, it would put a huge hurt on the econemy of those countries, causing unrest, and violate the rights of citizens to travel back and forth.....And he says how would we get help to them and return our help back to the us....HE says, no airplanes are going to just go one way.

But I agree with you, since there is no cure, and evidently someone not showing symptoms could easily get thru, as we have just witnessed, it just makes sense to close the border. But then, like we all know, borders all around us would have to be closed too and that hasnt worked in keeping people out either.

But it seems to me anyone coming from that part of the world, should at least be quarantined for a duration before allowing passage in, at least. And that would be expensive, but what the hell? We are talking about lives here!

I am not sure how that could cause more harm.  Do they mean people couldn't leave and get away from it??  But so far, we have cases (that we know of .  .   might be even more that we don't) of ebola leaving that area via travel.  I think they need to look at containment really hard.  Drastic measures even.  For the greater good.  At least that is how I feel about it.  I really think there should be a travel ban and would wonder if one isn't coming soon.  A few more cases arriving at American airports and I think that would have to be the case.

I know they are considering that possibility but the CDC says that could cause more harm than not....I do know that certain airlines have already stopped flights on their own from infected areas.

I read these things and think if it does turn out to be ebola . . .   how many people has he been in contact with?  This is how things get out of hand.  I really don't understand why there isn't a travel band to certain countries.  There clearly should be in my mind.

Good question, and that crossed my mind as well. I have also noticed that they have avoided the whole conversation on CNN about him... Makes the eyebrows raise a little doesnt it?

Hi there, what I am wondering is if it takes a few days to test for Ebola how did the airline determine that the man vomiting on the plane was ok?

Just thinking out loud. I am going back to read that story.

Surely this doc has had his flu shot I hope....And since the treatment was experimental, it could be a reaction or complication of the treatment....Too many unknowns about that treatment.
