Poll shows Americans want to see Romney's tax returns

(CNN) – A majority of Americans say presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney should release income tax information beyond the two years he's already disclosed.

The USA Today/Gallup survey showed 54% of those surveyed felt Romney should release tax returns from additional years, compared to 37% who said Romney should not release more returns.

Romney has released his tax return from 2010, and an estimate for his 2011 information. He filed for an extension on submitting his taxes in April, and has vowed to release the full return when the documents are finalized and filed.

Democrats, and some Republicans, have urged Romney to disclose more of his tax information. Democrats say additional returns will clear up questions about offshore accounts and his rate of income tax, while Republicans say it would be politically advantageous to disclose more information. President Barack Obama's campaign immediately blasted out the poll Thursday as an indication their campaign push is working.

In Thursday's poll, 30% of self-identified Republicans said Romney should release more of his returns, compared to 75% of Democrats and 53% of Independents who said the same.

The survey also showed respondents were divided on whether or not the tax return information was relevant to the campaign. Forty-seven percent said having more tax return information from Romney would be "largely irrelevant" to making a decision at the voting booth, compared to 44% who said the returns would provide ""legitimate information that helps voters make better decisions."

The Gallup/USA Today poll was taken by telephone on Wednesday from 539 adults. The sampling error was plus or minus 5 percentage points.

I'd agree with Vance about the tax returns... if the President shows his college records, why not show more tax returns.  It is all diversionary tactics as previously stated.

I don't care about Mitt's tax returns any more than I do Obama's.  I also don't care about Mitt's college education, but it's out there to look at.  (Nobody is going to expose something that looks bad, right?)

Bottom line, if we continue at this pace... well, you can expect more of the same BS.  You can expect more finger pointing.  It's not going to change.  Not in my lifetime, anyhow.

Just another distraction.
Both Parties have people investigating for any dirt they can find and I don’t need Romney’s financial records to prove he was wealthy prior to a couple of years ago.

“ additional returns will clear up questions about offshore accounts and his rate of income tax”
Let’s be realistic, these people are good at what they do and can dig up any information they want about Romney’s offshore accounts with or without his tax returns.
As far as “his rate of income tax,” if there were anything done illegally the IRS would be all over it.

“President Barack Obama's campaign immediately blasted out the poll Thursday as an indication their campaign push is working.”
I can’t argue with them there. They get excited over anything that distracts voters attention away from Economy and the locked in 8.2% unemployment rate (I don’t understand why the Republicans are not jumping all over the proclaimed 8.2% when very little effort can prove it is much higher).

I don’t consider myself a Die Hard Republican, I just don’t like Obama and find that if 75% of Democrats said Romney should release more of his returns but 75% of Democrats didn’t say Obama should have released his Birth Certificate when first asked, hypocritical.

Because is always us against them in America. When you have people giving different people labels it will always be that way. Rich, middle class, poor, white, African-American... Why not just call everyone an American. It should help to end class warfare which both sides are playing and helps out race becuase we are not putting people into a box of this or that.

By the way I am tried of all the ___________-American stuff, because if your an American I don't care what color you are and neither should you.

"Romney should ask B.O., since the gloves are quite obviously coming off... "So, Barack... when did you stop beating your wife?"

Asking him for more than 2 years of returns is the equivalent of that question."

El, I know you're joking but really, how is this the equivalent ?
And I so wish you'd stop calling Obama, B.O. It makes me picture you as a Beevis and Butthead character, about 15 years old and tittering because someone said B.O.
Not very respectful, dude.

Okay... I'm waiting for it.

"If he's got nothing to hide, then why is he refusing to give us what we're asking for???"

Like I said above, look long and hard enough, and you're going to find a mistake.

You're just looking for something so you can crucify him, and reduce the threat he poses to King Obama.

Romney should ask B.O., since the gloves are quite obviously coming off... "So, Barack... when did you stop beating your wife?"

Asking him for more than 2 years of returns is the equivalent of that question.

There's NO correct answer.

If he doesn't, he's hiding something. If he does, they'll find something to pin on him.

Mitts is dammed if he does, and dammed if he doesn't.

No other presidential hopefuls have been asked for more than 2 years worth of tax-returns... so why now? Why Romney?

My guess... dig long and hard enough, and you're going to find a mistake.

H3ll, if you look at MY past tax-returns, I feel CERTAIN that you'll find an error or 2.

That said, I know that I'M not running for President of the United States, but the rules should be the same for everyone.

2 years is all he's obligated to share.

Is this going to be a witch-hunt by the opposition to try and destroy Mitts, before he's even out of the gate?

Me thinks YES.
