Syrian unrest raises fears about chemical arsenal

News Alert: Syrian unrest raises fears about chemical arsenal
August 28, 2011 6:05:04 PM
----------------------------------------

A sudden collapse of the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could mean a breakdown in controls over the country's weapons, U.S. officials and weapons experts say. Syria possesses some of the deadliest chemicals ever to be weaponized, dispersed in thousands of artillery shells and warheads that are easy to transport.

Although many analysts doubt that Assad would deliberately share chemical bombs with terrorists, it is not inconceivable that weapons could vanish amid the chaos of an uprising that destroys Syria's vaunted security services, which safeguard the munitions.

"This is a scenario that's on the radar screen if things go downhill," said a U.S. security official who monitors events in Syria. "A lot of people are watching this closely."

I would also focus on a national level of ending a dependence on foreign oil and realize that countries like Saudi Arabia are not our allies. Among the various groups that are rebelling against the countries in the middle east the anti American and anti Israeli stance is actually worse. Much of the political power the countries have there is through their ability to manipulate the price of oil and if that were stopped their ability to be able to arm themselves to this extent would lessen. Unfortunately we have been especially in past years supporting one country to end the regime of another and we should realize that the best solution is to stop relations and especially support of any kind to the countries there. Israel is the only democracy there and although I'd like to see that change I don't believe it will happen soon.

Actually as a Christian I am thinking more of the fulfillment of Revelations. It is all predicted to happen so its interesting watching it all come about. But that is my opinion.

That whole region is scary right now.  I didn't realize that Syria had these types of weapons, and agree..I doubt this lunatic would be hesitant to unleash them, especially if he felt he was going down.  It's scary times.
