Periodontal disease - and now what?

Hello all,

I'm 30 years old and am facing a huge decision that will change the way I feel about my smile and greatly affect the way I look for the rest of my life.  I've turned to a forum to ask for help because who better to ask than those that are in the same boat or have been there before.

I've had periodontal disease for the last 3 years and was diagnosed with a severe case just a week ago.  My periodontist suggests that I should undergo a flap operation.  Doesn't sound too bad until you know that I have pockets of about 8-9 mm deep and that I will remain with a healthy gum but no additional stability and with holes that are big enough to park your car backwards in.

Not only am I thirty but also a professional trainer and my smile is a huge trademark attribute.  My question to the forum is do I do the flap which will cost around the 3000 and get a healthy gum and keep my teeth - or get a full denture and although have false teeth will also provide a healthy gum but a decent smile as well.

Any advise would be welcome and any insight about why I should do any dentures is welcome as that is definitely sounding like the best option at this point.
Thanks in advance
LL

Pockets of 8/9 seem pretty hopeless--10 means completely hopeless and apparent removal.  The flap surgery will help, but I highly doubt even after the surgery that you will be able to save the teeth with such high probing numbers.

See if your local dental school could offer suggestions and advice.  It is difficult to make such a drastic decision such as tooth removal as such a young age.

Flap surgery generally results in large interdental space ,which is inevitable if we desire to reduce the pocket depth. For cosmetic reason, removable artificial interdental papilla can be made to put in the mouth . Further consultation with your periodontist and restorative dentist is advised.
