Pitting and discoloration on front teeth

The pitting along the gumline of my front four teeth has been getting worse and worse over the years, and it's to the point that I'm starting to feel self conscious about smiling.  I've included a picture of my teeth, is there anything besides veneers that I can do?  The pitted areas have been getting bigger and darker within the last 6 months and I want to turn it around asap to avoid them looking any worse.

You can tell from the lighting where the pitted areas are, the right tooth it comes down more than halfway down the left side of the tooth.

Are there any short term fixes I can do to make them look much better?  Are crowns/veneers the only long term solution at this point?  Thank you for the help.

I need some help .
I brush my teeth twice a day and have been noticing some cuts and pain on my gum .
I am not sure if it is due to brushing to hard?

Interesting, I hadn't considered that.  It may be part of the problem, but definitely isn't all of it, since you can see the pitting goes well below where the gums may or may not have been.

I still am wondering, what is the best short and long term solution here?  Even with gum surgery, it wouldn't fix the rest of the problems with the teeth.  Is there a less drastic fix?

It appears this may be due to gum recession, and I think a dentist would suggest surgery to correct this, which would be to cover the dark areas with tissue because it isn't supposed to be exposed.  This is from gum disease.  To avoid more of it, floss and brush gently with toothpaste and an extra soft brush, being careful of your gum tissue and this exposed softer tooth part.
