Why is the pain worse after a root canal treatment?

I had a root canal treatment around 3-4 days ago on my wisdom teeth. The pain was specific then, It was on the gum that was covering my teeth. The Dentist told me that I can save it by doing a root canal so I agreed since the alternative was to extract it.

He did the procedure and prescribed Amoxicillin along with Ibuprofen and Paracetamol. I went back home and I was fine. No pain whatsoever and I was glad that for once, I was pain free.

So a a day or two after the procedure, I woke up at night with severe pain.  I've never felt like this before in my life, I took Ibuprofen and even used Lidocaine spray but nothing seemed to work so I laid down again on my other side until the pain disappeared and I went back to sleep. This kept happening through out the night so the next day, I decided to see my GP to get an injection for the pain since I thought it would pass.

But the next day, It continued, It was even worse. The pain would come on so suddenly and leave me clutching my cheek and trying not to burst into tears. A friend suggested that I should see my dentist now instead of waiting till my appointment which is in a couple of weeks so I did go but my dentist wasn't there and another saw me.

He asked me to open my mouth so I did but he then told me that my mouth opening was limited and that the infection has spread to my muscles. I asked him to help me with the pain and he said he can't do anything without me being able to open my mouth fully so he changed my antibiotics and gave me Diclofenac and told me to go home.

The pain was still there but he said he couldn't do anything so I returned home and the pain got a bit better after taking the pain killers but then around 30 minutes ago, It hit me again out of nowhere and  I don't know what to do. Ice makes the pain worse, Lidocaine spray is not helping at all and neither are the pain killers. I just want to smash my face against something and cry.

It feels like I'm being electrocuted from my ear to my chin on the left side of my face and It also has given me a headache.

So I'd like to know why this is happening and how can I stop this horrific pain? And can I do about it in the mean time?
