a popsicle irritated upper lip

Several months ago, during the summer, I sucked on several iced popsicles for a few days. Now I know that I have damaged the lining on my upper lip generally in the area of my upper front four teeth. The popsicles were very cold and had ice particles on them and foolishly I sucked on the popsicles. They were so cold I couldn't feel they were doing damage to my upper lip. I guess you could say it was like sucking on a popsicle lined with sandpaper.
Anyway, it hasn't healed like I thought it should. In the morning it has this off-white colored tissue on it. I think it's trying to heal and that's the scab forming. But after I rinse my mouth and brush my teeth the scabs fall off. I've been putting vaseline or some lip moisturizers on it because I thought that might help.
It doesn't look infected or growing, it's just red and raw looking. My dentist said give it some time and it should heal ok. But it been four months now. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Oh, I also tried rinsing in a Peroxide mouth rinse for a week or so. Maybe it helped a little, not really sure.  Thanks in advance. Valkmancarl . Lexington, SC

Hi again,
Try not to use anything on it directly at all.  If you have to make your teeth "slippery" at night, use a small amount of vaseline smeared on the teeth that will touch the sore.  Don't use anything on the area itself.
Brush your teeth gently there and don't pull on your lip.

Good luck.   Just remember, less is more.  :)

Best to you,
Gellia

I just wanted to say thank you for your help.

I followed your advice and didn't use anything on my lip and within two days it began healing substantially. In five days it has healed 100% and you can't even tell it was ever injured.

Thank you so much for the correct advice.

Merry Christmas,

Thank you for the prompt reply.
My concern is that it's been about four months since I hurt it.
I think it's healing, albeit very slowly. Could the vaseline and lip moisturizers I've been using been slowing the healing process? And when I go to bed for the night I've been putting vaseline on it because without it my damaged lip sticks to my teeth and gums. I guess it dries out while I'm sleeping.
Thanks again for your time.
BTW, I've been in the tanning and light phototherapy business since 1987 if I can ever return the favor.
Regards,

Hi,
Sometimes treating something like that too much is more damaging than healing.  I think your dentist is right.  Do less, not more.   You have to leave it alone and let it heal on it's own.  A mouth sore like that has to heal from the edges in (if I understand the problem correctly) toward the center.  Try to be very gentle in that area.  If you can, do not touch it. It should start to heal over in about 10 days to two weeks.  The white tissue is tissue trying to cover the open area.  That is the start of healing.  Try to leave it alone.  Don't pull on your lip to check it all the time cause that too, may be disrupting healing tissue.

I know it's hard, but try to just ignore it for a week or so.  Brush gently in that area and do less, not more.

GOOD LUCK.  If you do this and it still hasn't started to heal, go back to the dentist.

My very best to you,
Gellia
