bleeding gums

I'm a 28 year old female and last week while I was brushing my teeth, i saw blood on my toothbrush and saw blood on my gums.

Today i was sitting outside and tasted blood in my mouth and saw that my gums were bleeding near my molars.  This has happened once before.  Should I go tot he docotor or wait for it to happen again?

I have a history of cancer and leukemia in my family, every web site I looked at said that it is a sign of leukemia.

Should I be worried?

There are many things that can cause your tissue to bleed, not just periodontal disease.  I agree with scottma but you may want to try seeing a general dentist first since it is cheaper and it could be just a simple explanation such as gingivitis, vitamin deficiency or hormones.

The general dentist would refer you to a specialist if he thinks its something unusual.  Make sure you are brushing 2x daily (at least) and floss 1x daily (at least).  Also make sure you are getting your teeth cleaned twice a year.

Hi,
Bleeding from the gums is the first sign of periodontal disease.  Do yourself a BIG favor and go to the dentist for a deep cleaning.  If you don't, what happens is the plaque that is making your gums bleed will further get down between your gum and the tooth.  Then what is called dental pockets form around your teeth.  These pockets are a breeding ground for bacteria that will eventually work its way to the periodontal ligament  and spread to all your teeth.  It will eventually dissolve the bone that holds in your teeth.

Not to mention the bleeding gives you really bad breath!!

A simple cleaning now can save you a tremendous amount of pain, grief and expense later.  If the bleeding stops by itself you have just gone from stage one to stage two of periodontal disease.  It lulls you into thinking everything is OK.  Wrong!!
Been there,...did that.  And, I lost FOUR teeth.

Please make an appt to see your dentist ASAP.  You will save yourself a world of hurt later.

My very best to you,
Gellia
