onlay v. crown

Hello....about 6 weeks ago I had work done on my bottom right 3 back teeth.  The very last tooth had and old filling, the middle tooth an ugly crown and the tooth in front of it a large crack and decay under existing filling.  My DDS opted for an inlay, onlay and new crown.    From the time the numbing medicine wore off the cracked tooth hurt.  I returned to my DDS 3 or 4 times complaining of a toothache, jaw pain and earache.  He felt the tooth was "too high" and adjusted it to no avail.
Today I had a root canal on the tooth....and guess what?  Absolutley NO PAIN.  My question is this....since the now root canaled tooth was cracked to begin with should I insist on a crown or will the custom inlay suffice??  I just am not sure it will be strong enough.  Please advise.

Thanks
Dutchie

He worked on getting to the nerves for over an hour and showed me that the nerves were not visable on the xray. Now my dentist says he will remove the crown and fix the cavity is this the answer or should I have it pulled out?  Implant is not for me I would need a sinus lift and I have read that it is dangerous I am 73 yrs old and don't want to take a chance with another part of my body. Has anyone had success with the crown off decay fixed and new crown replaced?
