How do you know you need a root canal

I have a temporary crown on my back lower teeth. I have sensitivity around my gums whenever I eat something cold (like ice cream) or even chocalate sticking down there bothers it. Also when brushing my teeth along the gum line causes sensitivity also. My dentist said my temporary crown is not long enough, so part of my gums are exposed, so that is why it is sensitive. After she poked my sensitive gums, the area has become more sensitive. I do not have any other pain, besides when I bite down on really hard stuff (like burned french fries). So how do I know when I need a root canal? My regular dentist, said I do not need to go see the root canal specialist. What do you think?

they might be a little sensitive but most of the time it will calm down after awhile. i have a crown on a tooth that still has a nerve and it took several months before it felt normal. i avoided chewing things that bothered it for a little while and gave it time to calm down. we are talking very minor discomfort while chewing hard items and mildly cold sensitive any more than that contact your dentist.

So, do you think after the permanent crown is put on, that I won't have any sensitivity when eating very hard stuff (like peanuts or burnt french fries)? Because right now with my temporaries, I do get a little bit of pain, but not like before when it would send a shock to me.

your dentists sounds correct. if you were having issues with heat sensitivity i would be concerned but the symptoms you have should be eliminated after the permanent crown is placed.
