Existence

I don't know if I'm depressed or just too intelligent. I feel like life is just pretend. Life is a game, a movie. No one is real. No one knows anyone. It is all just pointless. Life i don't see the point in still being alive. I just don't think there is a big enough pleasure to make  going through the pains of life worth it. I just want to curl up under my bed and sleep for a very long time. Everyone tells me bs things but they mean nothing because they are just words. What i think in my mind is what i am thinking...i don't see how i could get any better. I just feel like killing myself is the best and smartest solution available for this ridiculous life i live. Now it's not really how MY life is...it is life in general. It is so pointless, redundant and unnecessary. I mean maybe there are answers for me that I haven't thought of. I'm not the type to give up. I guess we'll just see.

Yeah, im feeling like this at the moment and i have done in the past i honestly think its what most intelligent human beings experience at some point in their lives. Questioning the deeper questions in life are always gonna lead to these feelings. Maybe youve got too much time on your hands to think, ha ha!!  I find when im feeling confused, depressed and even suicidal the best thing to do is test yourself, have fun put yourself in a new situation. This isnt always easy ,especially as you generally lack motivation in these instances, but the way i look at it is, if your feeling suicidal anyway, youve got nothing to lose. When i felt like this a few years back i quit my job and went and worked in spain for the summer and back packed around europe. It adds a bit of excitement to life and i find it helps to get out of the same humdrum town. Im an atheist and know you give life its meaning. i dont know anything about you or what youve done but i think maybe you need to make more of an effort to make a change.

Hope that helped

Andy

Honey, I feel ya. People are stupid and just because you have an intolerance for idiots does NOT mean there is something wrong with you, there is something wrong with them. 70% of Americans read at a 5th grade reading level and we even have a tv show with adult contestants called Are you smarter than a 5th grader? and few win. I currently work for a major credit card company and you WOULD NOT believe some of the things I hear. I leave work most days wishing I was a brain surgeon so I could complete their lobotomies. My suggestion , look for signs of intelligent life, join a local MENSA chapter, try finding a position in research or a laboratory setting, I am going back to med school to start research and development . You and I are the people who will and can stop global warming, encourage world peace, cure cancer and AIDS, save this world. Just think of yourself as a parent to the multitude of 5th graders out there and TRY to find enough intellect to develop in them and bring them up to being WORTH the air they breathe. YOU ARE. Feel free to IM me, and try Sudoku on the expert level it will tickle your brain... hehehe

My dear girl,

It sounds to me as though you may be intelligent AND depressed.

Please don't kill yourself, at least not before you try a couple of things...
1. Talk to a mental health worker and/or a psychiatrist about your feelings and see whether they think you qualify as clinically depressed. Depression is an illness that can be treated. You could at least give an antidepressant a chance to work. How hard would that be?
2. If by "what I think in my mind is what I am thinking" you mean we make our own reality, I believe that is largely true. To that end, your negative thoughts can be changed with cognitive behavioral therapy or some other technique. It works.
3. As to life being "pointless, redundant and unnecessary" - if you cannot find pleasure in anything, that is called "anhedonia" and is a feature of depression, which is an illness. See above.
4. You are not the first person to be disappointed in people and the world in general and to wonder about the great questions such as "Why am I here?" and "Where am I going?" You might read what some of the great philosophers in history had to say about that, just to get some perspective on your situation. I find it comforting that other people than I have worried about these issues, too. It might help you to better come to a conclusion.
5. You say you "don't see how life can get any better". Certainly, you can't know what the future holds for you. It might be something of immense satisfaction that you cannot even dream of at the moment. Believe me, I sympathize with your disillusionment with people, but I believe it's quite possible you are clinically depressed.

I wish you the best of luck.
Bob

You wonder if you are "too intelligent" or "just depressed". It could be a combination of the two.
