Like Maddie said, anti-depressants are not steroids. There are MANY different medications used to treat depression, not just SSRIs. If you don't have luck with the SSRI medications (like Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac, Lexapro, etc), there are the older, tricyclic antidepressants, like Elavil. There are SNRI's (selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors), like Effexor as well.
Keep working with your doctor. Finding the right depression treatment is largely a trial and error process, that takes time. You must be open minded when trying a new med, and you have to give it ample time (at LEAST 6 weeks) for it to work.
Therapy is also crucial. Have you ever been in therapy? Managing depression takes work. Unfortunately, it's not as easy as popping a pill. It requires that you push yourself, even when you don't feel like it. The lack of motivation that comes with depression is a tough one...but you have to push through it, as much as you can. You have to accept that you'll have good days, and celebrate them. You have to learn how to not dwell on the bad ones.
Get involved in activities you may like, spend time with your family and friends, start a new hobby.
Please let us know how you're doing. Hang in there....it can take some time, but with some work, and the right mental health team, you can improve your quality of life significantly.
Hi, anti depressants are not steroids. If , as you say, you are still at school, then I assume you are young. Are you sure you have tried every ant-depressant? Some, as you say make us worse, but I suggest you keep trying, until you find the one that works for you.
There are many anti-depressants on the market. I don't know where you got the idea they were steroids.
