I'm not sure what you mean by impulsive thoughts? Are you acting out in impulse? Are you following them?

Because, Impulsivity is a normal mechanism of the brain, in which the person has less control due to sensitivity and over stimulation.
Without the brain sending us signals of danger, we will automatically walk off a cliff, or we will automatically touch a burning stove element. Every person has thoughts that disturb us, which is normal, for example if someone is standing above a cliff edge, the danger signals may send them thoughts warning them against jumping. But if you are over sensitive to more extreme visualization, you may actually replay the incident of falling, or jumping over and over in your mind, it may scare you, thus you end up focusing on the imagery of actually doing it - this can be mistaken for a burning desire to fulfil the thoughts of action, especially for a person who is over stimulated and sensitive, and this is what creates an impulse. It is basically an overreactive imagination, which confuses the signals in your brain.
And especially if a person is depressed or has mental illness, their thoughts are more negative than most people, and they are more over reactive and sensitive to their surroundings.

When you understand the way you are viewing things, is due to the sensitivity and over imagination, you should know to learn coping skills of grounding, relaxation, and coping skills that will help you with over stimulation. It doesn't necessarily mean you have a mental illness, it just means you are over stimulated.

Now, out of body experience in psychological terms is Disassociation, or Derealization, which also means you are over stimulated, and disassociation usually always leads to a person feeling like they are out of the body, thus their body moves without them leading to impulses. Disassociation can be a scary, as well as dangerous if it becomes extreme.
Both of things are entwined, and in this case it sounds like you are disassociating, which is causing the impulses. As i already said, disassociation is caused by over stimulation.

The main things that can cause over stimulation and disassociation, are trauma. Usually people who have underwent very horrible traumatic experiences, can begin to disassociate directly after the experience, but most times later on in their life (thus it becomes confusing for them and they don't know why it's happening now).
But if you have anxiety, about something, or even crowded places, it can easily bring it on.
I even disassociate when my surroundings are too busy.
It is all just a flight or fight mechanism the brain has. A very amazing natural coping skill (which can become dangerous though). If you are in extreme physical pain, your mind will eventually "shut down" and escape, and you will feel like you are no longer there. Lesser events can cause it though. It would be good to go to therapy, so you can find out the cause in order to treat the over stimulation and impulse, if it is due to trauma.
Also, if you engage in self harm of any form, that is a very good cause for disassociation and lack of impulse control.

It's a pretty long explanation, but hopefully you got something from it.
If you think it's what you are going through, you can get through it. I have, and i have had disassociation problems for my whole life, due to trauma, and it created very dangerous impulsive thoughts, whereas i ended up hurting myself. It should not be left untreated, because it can become dangerous.
