Post Hysterectomy with Mood Swings

I am 3 weeks post op.  I had my uterus and Cervix removed, although I still have my ovaries.  The last couple days I have had major mood swings and a Acne breakout.  I talked to my Dr and she said she said it will go away. She said if you take a happy healthy person and tell them they can't do anything it can cause these types of moods.  I felt better that she put it in that sense, although yesterday I was driving and had a bad case of road rage.  I had my son in the car and he started to cry.  I never behave this way! I am Mrs. Calm and look at the bright side of things. I yelled at my kids and my husband for no good reason.  I feel ashamed and don't no what to do.  I have to go back to work next week and I have a boss that makes a drill seargant look nice and I have always been able to handle her in the past, but I fear with my new emotions this could be bad situation for me.  Any suggestions would be most helpful.  Thank you!

I had the same problem. My ovaries went to "sleep" after the surgery. It is a very common thing that can happen, my surgeon explained its there was of protecting themselves almost. Things seemed to level off and get back to normal around 3 mnths I believe.  Talk to your surgeon and they should be able to explain it to you but it is very common. I found the site hystersisters very helpful after I had mine.

I don't think this is related to your surgery.  Your hormones are produced by your ovaries which you still have, so they weren't affected.  I think you may have some depression going on which would explain your feelings and mood swings.  It would be worthwhile to speak with a psychiatrist about this, because this won't get better on it's own.  It may just be coincidental that it's hit you after your hysterectomy, or it may be an emotional response to you having the surgery. Often depression hits us out of the blue, but seeking help can help you to figure this all out.  I wish you all the best.

hi,you will feel like that for a few months yet until your hormones settle down,it really takes a year to get over a hysterectomy, you will have goods and bad days, just take it easy, you should be of work for six weeks,i feel you are not ready to go back to work yet go back to your GP and get a longer sick line for another few more weeks.take plenty rest i know that might be difficult since you have children.
