What is wrong with my husband?!?!

My husband used to be a fun and active person.  In the past 5 years he has turned into a miserable human being... He never has a positive outlook on anything, he is mean to his family and thinks we are out to get him but is friendly to complete strangers.  There is no talking to him, everything is my fault... He is now talking about suicide and in the past has had dreams of killing me and our children.  He had seen a doctor who prescribed him Cymbolta but he wouldn't take it because he said "I don't want to get hooked on pills like you" (I am on Lexapro).  What do I do with him? How to I make him happy again, I miss him terribly, it is like he is two people he has his great days then there are days like today when he just wants to be locked in a room... Someone help...

Hello. These could be warning signs that need not be ignored. Are there others like family or friends that have also observed these changes? If so, it may help for them to express their feelings to him as well. Is there any substance abuse, alcohol or other? Is this having an effect on his work? Aa previously stated, you need to look out for the well being of yourself and your children, and being armed with the facts and support of others could be very important. Keep posting and take care, GM

I'm sorry your family is going through such rough times.  Well, we all know that when someone starts talking about suicide that it should be taken seriously and reacted too immediate.  Deep  depression does not normally go away on it's own. and normally tends to worsen over time if  left untreated.

If he will not take  medication that will help him, will he go to therapy? Speak  with a Minister, a friend?  Does he trust anyone?  Have you told him you are concerned about his safety? The well being of your family ?  Honestly, I am sure you have already told him all of this...what happens if he doesn't get help?  I don't know,  but if he will not seek help you may have to speak with a professional...oh, and don't forget you and your childrens mental health going thru all of this....you must take care of yourself and definitely those kids.
