Effexor is a very old drug now -- I think it was the first of the snri category, the same one Cymbalta is in.  It's main downside is it can be very very hard to stop taking, but so can Cymbalta and any other drug in this category, but Effexor has the worst reputation.  It also has a newer cousin, Pristiq, which is Effexor minus a few parts, much as Lexapro is Celexa minus a few parts.  Theoretically, that makes it an easier med, but who knows?
