thank you for your welcome advice its hard when you feel like the only person fighting this crappy illness it just seems as if when i have a few minor setbacks they up the dose if anything lister i would like to be off these meds completely but feel scared to even try lowering them my mum had some slight mental illness years and years ago and  i often wonder if it can be inherited as i would hate my kids to go through this thank you so very much for your advice take care

Hi, yes I've been on Citalopram for 11 years aswell.
Recently I went back down to 40 from 60mg as it didn't seem to make any significant difference and was above the recommended dose.
I didn't suffer any side effects from the higher dose and I think it was worth trying before changing to another AD because of the difficulties inherent in making such a change.
I'm still not happy with the results. I still get longish periods of depression and anxiety (admittedly not as bad as before) the rest of the time I just feel flat, listless, disinterested and have a lot of trouble sleeping (always have had).
To my surprise, doctor added Dothiepin (Dosulepin) 75mg to my prescription, mainly to help with the insomnia, to be reviewed in six weeks.
I'm also going to try therapy again. As AJ39 has found, the right kind of therapy can work wonders.
I'm sure you already know, but I feel it's worth pointing out (for the newly diagnosed perhaps) that there are aids and tools, like medication and therapy and various methods for coping with and alleviating the symptoms of the condition but no cure.

I feel the exact same way! I've been on multiple ssris x 11 yrs and currently just started zoloft and have been increased 3 times - yikes. But this time around I really got out of my comfort zone. I made an appt. with a psychiatrist who placed me on the correct dosage and the correct type of brand. I also have started seeing a therapists that deals with depression, I always thought "I know what is depresing me I can fix it myself", but after a couple of horrible bouts of anxiety due to depression I made an appt. I ve seen her only three times, but wow, the last visit I felt so much better and I received a lot of answers  and ideas that never even occured to me. She has a lot resources that didn't know that was out there. also I'm thinking about joining a group with woman going thru the same depression w every day things like me. Keep writing it is helpful. I'll be listening.
