mood stablizers

What do mood stablizers do for people who arent bipolar...my dr is using it to get me off benzos and to help my anxiety,but just how do they help...i mean  if u are in a sad mood are they going to stabilze you to be sad/

Thanks my dr is using depakote er on me...hoping it works but im sure having anxiety!!

Indeed mood stabilizers like gabapentin, pregabalin, topiramate are used in benzos withdrawal because they have anticonvulsive proprieties and they also can help with anxiety. The anticonvulsive proprieties will avoid the risk any seizure that could happen during a benzos withdrawal and their mood stabilizing effect are linking to the GABA receptors which are the same receptors that benzos are targeting.

They are not going to stabilize a sad mood, they will prevent anxiety and panic attack which are destabilization of a normal mood therefore stabilize a normal state of mind.
