natural remedy for depression?

Hi, I'm 35 feeling depressed, hopeless, anxious. I don't enjoy doing things like I used to and this scares me. I'm married, mother of 2 and I don't even have the emotional strength to do fun things. What's worse is that I wasn't always like this I used to get on my feet pretty quickly after every problem and now I feel like a car without gas. I can't even enjoy my husband. I'm trying to avoid going to a psiquiatrist because I'm scared off pills. Is there any natural remedy that really works??

Birdie is very right.  Our FDA does not evaluate any vitamins or herbal or natural remedies.  That's why consumerlab, you can find it on-line, does test many of them and often does not approve them based on toxicity such as lead or because they don't have the amount of the vitamin or herbal in them that they say they do.  There are many of us who suffer from depression.  It is not something to be ashamed of or to be afraid of treating it.  Depression is usually a chemical imbalance just like a diabetic has an imbalance of insulin.  And depression has negative physical effects on your whole body.  It affects the telomeres which cause early onset of older people's diseases such as osteoporosis and strokes.  Go on-line and check it out. If you can't find it, post me back and I will find buzz words that will bring up NY Times or Wall Street Journal articles.  Get help from your doctor and save your marraige and your family.  Good luck.

The essential thing for me is help from the Lifter of my head, the Comforter of the depressed.  I am a Christian, but even Christians struggle with depression and anxiety.

I wanted to do natural things too for depression.  I had a psychiatrist recommend Naturemade brand of Sam-E.  He said this was the only brand (years ago now) that he recommended owing to scientific study with it and depression.  I tried to go off it for awhile recently and have wound up back on it.

He also recommended foods high in mood boosting omega fatty acids, such as pumpkin seeds, walnuts, (later I learned macadamia nuts is another good source), freshwater fish, such as salmon and tuna.  I take flaxseed oil capsules (not too late in the day though because it seemed to cause dreams) instead of fish oil capsules also.

Listening to uplifting music, drinking in the beauties of God's creation, thinking on good things, these can also help with mood.

Having the kind of bulbs in your house like they use for garden hot houses that imitate natural sunlight for when it's gloomy looking outside may be helpful also.

Exercise and hugging your loved ones can help release mood boosting endorphines in your body, so going for a walk, even if it has to be on a treadmill because of weather outside, or a swim at the Y or using an exercise bike- whatever exercise you can do would be good.

Thanks for your replies girls.... Definitely I also believe there is no guarantee. This is why I'm trying so bad to feel better on my own, because I miss me ( like Lisa says) :0). I guess we see ourselves this way and we think we are the only ones going thru these changes, is good to know that there are others in the same boat :0). But, yes I will go to a doctor and get some advice and definitely get some labs done..... Have a great evening everyone!!

Natural meds have not gone through double blinded trials like prescription ones and have no regulations to stop them from making any claims they wish. A manufacturer's brother can be the person who makes the claim the natural med cured them. A lot of studies are done on SSRIs to determine if they work, and some will claim they don't, however no one has done a study of natural antidepressants so you are a guinea pig on your own if you try them and something goes wrong.
There is no guarantee of purity because otc are not regulated and have no standards.
Finally, poison ivy is natural but to be avoided, so just being natural is not a guarantee it is good for you to take. My chiropractor was horrified when a woman told me she was using "natural cortisol" to relieve pain, because he said there is nothing natural about self regulating cortisol levels in your body.

I would first recommend that you see a naturopathic dr  if you want to go this route. They will be able to help you. I might want to add, to have your vitamin levels checked, in particular vit b's and vit d. Also your Thyroid levels. These can contribute to the problems you are having. Mine were all low. Taking fish oil (no mercury in it) helps a lot too. Your primary dr can run these tests and help you.  If you decide to go to a naturopathic dr, you can take these test results with you as well so he has the whole picture.

I know of a Health Guide that takes SamE (not sure of the spelling but I think). Bought at the health food store or vit shop. I think GNC has it too. She says this really works for her. You can research it and see. Hope this helps.
