Can weight loss happen due to Depression ?

I was very much anxious of hiv infection due to my stay with hiv infected person. I had tested and found -ve.
my most annoying thing was my weight loss of 1.5 - 2 kg in two weeks.
can this happen due to depression?

and i 've re gained it in 2 weeks time?

I had consulted psychiatrists who attributed all my problem to anxiety and depression?

It could be depression, or if you're on medication that might be it. Not really sure about anxiety causing weight changes though, I'm now curious.  Reported Report this Spam

Anxiety and depression can cause one to lose weight, but the important thing is that you have gained it back.  If you have been dignosed with anxiety and depression you need to start getting help for this.  Sometimes when depressed we tend to not eat and anxiety can make us not want to eat.  But you need to find out why you are depressed and anxious so that you can deal with it and move on with your life.  Take care..  Reported Report this Spam

I lost 40 Lbs prior to being treated for my depression and anxiety. It's a pretty common result of depression that is well known. Some people have the opposite reaction and gain a lot of weight when they suffer untreated depression.

Just deprends on the person. For me it's the anxiety that supresses appitite, thus resulting in weight loss. No one wants to eat when they are anxious or having symptoms of panic.  Reported Report this Spam

Thanks for your info folks.

Initially when I had the fear of HIV symptoms, I body (felt) was weak and tender. There was some change in skin too.
I m not really sure, after anti-depressent for 2 weeks I started feeling better or is it that infection caused this problem and subsided.

Just to mention, I was eating normally in the period when i lost some weight. Someone said that due increased metabolic rate sue to stress could have casued this weight loss.

Frndz Pl comment.

I think depression can lead to weight loss. Before i went on mirtazapine My weight was a bit under what is should have been. Now Ive put on over a stone and want to get off mitrazapine as it no longer helps with depression. But I lost nearly a stone five years ago due to severe depression so it can cause weight loss. I want now want to lose a stone and get back to my normal weight of 11 stone for my build . I hate being overweight. I'm hoping to be given another antidepressent if and when I  go to Bridge Centre/mental health services. I may not be allowed back due to being there a few times and they just said each time I need to be more active and join different clubs and do some voluntary work. Depression stops me form being normal and doingh lots of things. So depression can cause weight loss but the meds will counter act the affect.

I have a friend who loses weight when she is worried or anxious, but eats the same.  My doctor told me that our bodies all react differently to stress some lose weight others don't.
