My 13 year old girl is losing her eyebrows.

About 4 months the middle section of hair in each of her eyebrows started thinning.  Now it looks like some one removed the hair in a straight horizontal line through the middle of each eyebrow and now the edges of the eyebrow are thinning also.  There is no redness are signs of infection and she appears fine in all other ways.  Can this be part of her body preparing to start menstruation? Or should I be more concerned?

my 11 year old has been losing her eyelashes for a year now. I am seeing just in the last month her eyebrows are thinning. right through the middle in a horizontal stripe. no dr. has diagnosed this. she does have low thyroid and sees a dr. at children but they don't think thyroid is the cause. im beginning to think she is wrong. have you had any updates or diagnosis or ways to fix? im concerned of her losing the hair on her head.

I have the same problem. I have lost my eyebrows slowly over several years. Now, the right one is nearly gone and left one starting to disappear. They are thinning from the nose and outwards. I have been to several doctors and they all just say they have never seen anything like it, and that they dont think it is Alopecia or telogen, because I only loose eyebrow hair (none on the head+ not in spots, but diffuse). Doctors have checked all; vitamin levels, thyroid tests etc..all come back clear. I have been under MAJOR stress for several years (with almost constant heartbeat/ adrenaline rush + following fatigue. I wonder if this can be the reason for the hair loss? My other assumption is some autoimmune disorder. Doctors checked for it, autoimmune tests came back clear, except one of the "general autoimmunes»that came back positive, but my doctor said also many people without a autoimmune disorder got a positive result on that one. Any experiences/ ideas what is wrong with me? Is this due to stress? Have any experienced regrowth after years of thinning brows? Should I try to get a further check for autoimmune disorder?

Any positive diagnosis yet from anyone. Two dermatologist has tried and failed to cure my daughter. any help would be great. Biopsy showed eyebrows are being pulled but she definitely does not pull them.

My 9 1/2 year old daughter is also losing her eyebrows. Her lashes and hair are still full and the pediatric dermatologist gave her a steroid cream for her eyebrows over 2 months ago.  There has been no regrowth.  We have another appointment tomorrow for a followup.  So far no blood tests have been done to determine if there is an underlying problem.  Do you have any answers yet?

HI - I too read the description of loss of hair from the inside of eyebrows.  I see that it has happened to others, and it is happening to my 9 1/2 yr old as well.  She is losing it in the exact same descriptive way, as well as her eye lashes.  Has anyone had a diagnosis? I have to wait for a month with the pediatric dermatologist, and the steroid cream the regular derm gave me is not working.  Has anyone had any conclusive information? thanks - just worried....

Hi,

I saw your description of what happened with your 13 year old daughter's eyebrows and the exact same has happened to my 12 year old daughter. I'm very concerned and am bringing her to our doctor today. I'm wondering if you had any success in finding out why this happeend or how to treat this.

Thank you.

Yes! I have started keeping a diary of my flare ups, which are pre menstrual. Also could it be that your water is too hard?

I installed a water filter in my shower & my seb-Derm ceased up until 7 days before my menstrual cycle.  So I tried that organic raw vinegar (Braggs) and the inflammation ceased immediately but the smell grossed me out.  The vinegar requires multiple applications.  So my next experiment is to increase the pH balance in my drinking water during my pre-menstrual/ hormonal phase, drinking some new volcanic water with 7.8 pH by WaiAkea.  Also, shampooing with "DHS" Zinc Shampoo for seborrheic dermatitis along with Kerastase Nutritive Bain Oleo-Relax Smoothing Shampoo/conditioner.  I also take Viviscal Hair Growth Supplements for the thinning caused by seb-Derm.
But most of all I have reduced my sugar intake to minimize yeast production. My reason for the above regimen is because I became cautious about long term use of all the topical steroid creams that eventually thin or damage the layers of skin.  As for my diet, broccoli, spinach, kale, Brussels & quinoa weekly along with plenty of water.  I'm still searching for a diet that help level the body's pH balance during my seb-Derm flare ups.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
There are many conditions which cause loss of eyebrow hair. These include hormonal imbalance, endocrine diseases like thyroid diseases, chemotherapy, infections like fungal infections, autoimmune diseases like lupus and alopecia and skin causes like seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis and contact dermatitis sometimes infilterating diseases like sclerosing diseases and vitamin deficiency can also cause eyebrow hair loss.

I suggest you to get an evaluation done from a dermatologist and till that time, to promote growth of eyebrows, give her a healthy protein rich diet and take some multivitamin supplements for some days. The most important nutrients are biotin, silica, magnesium, sulfur, zinc, and vitamin B6.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your dermatologist. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.

See a dermatologist.

I was just diagnosed with Seborrheic Dermatitis, and after reading about it I found it can also affect the eyebrows.  It is a chronic but relatively easy to treat skin condition that supposedly results from too much oil on the skin and commonly affects the scalp and eyebrows, but can also affect the face and chest.  I have no idea if this is it, but I have been experiencing a little hair loss on the scalp, but once treated, the hair will grow back.  See your doctor though; I am just providing a possible cause of your daughter's eyebrow hair loss.
