Rash around ankle

My mother is 95 years old and has been having a several rash around her ankles and the bottom part of her calves.  At times these are open wounds.  They burn, but do not itch.  They are painful and nothing seems to help.  She's seen her family physician and he gave her some cream and gel...it hasn't helped.  He sent her for an Ankle Brachial Test, but it showed nothing wrong.  Now we have an appt. with a dermatologist, but they can't see her for another week.  She was up all night last night in pain with this.  It is on both legs.  The open breakouts occur at the top of the rash on the calves, not the feet.  The feet have red spots but don't seem to open.  It is really angry looking.

I took my mother to the dermatologist. He scraped the area and his microscope said "fungus".  So we have a topical cream to use twice daily and hope that in two weeks it will be much, much better.
Thanks to all who commented or read this and were concerned.

Thanks Cherie
She's not bedridden, but did stay up with pain all last night.  She's not diabetic.  I'll try the pillows.  She does keep her sheets very tight on her legs and feet and that may be part of the problem.  I'll loosen those sheets.  Appreciate your response!

Take her to a dermatologist. Is she diabetic if yes this is cause for greater concern.

I worked in a nursing home and saw this a lot, its often a condition that will require meds topical and oral,,,,place pillows between the legs and or under so these dont turn into pressure sores, when she is sleeping. Or if she is bed ridden
