best medicine to treat scalp & skin fungus

Hi,

I have suffered for massive dandruff and developed itchiness on my head scalps, shoulder, and around my cheeks.
This has been going since 13 years ago.

My pharmacist suggest me ketoconazole tablet that she claimed can kill the fungus which caused this.
But after taking it for 5 days it seems doesn't get better.

Should I continue taking ketoconazole tablet for a longer period or is there is any other medicine out there to kill this fungus which caused me to suffers for years?

Thank you in advanced for you advice.

Regards

Hello,
Ketoconazole tablets when taken for long term without a medical supervision can cause alopecia, paresthesia, signs of increased intracranial pressure, neuropsychiatric disturbances, depression and ventricular arrhythmias. I hope it helps. Take care and regards.

Thank you for your reply Dr. Bhupinder,

I have completed 10x tablets of Ketoconazole 200mg 2 days ago, and stopped using it for a while until I get a new supply.

There's just a little bit itchiness left on my scalp, back of ears, and cheeks (which was compared to before taking it = WORSE).

For head treatment, I will use Stieprox shampoo with Ciclopirox Olamine 1.5% w/w which relieves my scalps itching & scaling issue.. a bit expensive but it works for me :)

I think I will continue using this tablets until I get examined by derma specialist.

By the way, is there is any side effects of using this medicine continuously?

Thank you in advanced.

regards,

Hello,
From the symptoms seborrheic dermatitis needs to be ruled out. Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition that causes flaky, dry, white to yellowish scales to form on oily areas esp under the nose or anywhere on face.

Treatment usually involves use of antifungal, anti inflammatory and sebo suppressive or Keratolytic ingredients. Dermatologist also recommends the use of photodynamic therapy which involves the usage of UV- A, UV- B laser and red or blue LED light to inhibit the growth of the yeast and reduces the inflammation.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
