Hi

You are welcome.

This has been present for a long time already. This may suggest a dermatitic most likely allergic contact dermatitis. Your mom may be allergic to certain food or beverages and she has been constantly taking these. In the case of dermatitis, this skin condition is chronic and non infectious. They are thus, not contagious. However, you have mentioned a foul odor and also the length of time that this has been present may suggest that an overlying infection may be present.

I would suggest an evaluation of the scales so that a fungal infection may be ruled out.

Hello,
Thank you for replying.
well there has never been itchiness however after eating certain food like mangos causes a redness, irritation and sometimes a small bump. Bleeding occured when peeled or too much dried.
It started in the middle of the upper lip (still remains)and has spread to the lower lip covering mostly near the inner part i.e mouth.but didnot spread on the upper lip.
many anti fungul, antiseptics type ointments have been prescribed and one thing was common in prescriptions was to lubricate with petroleum jelly . it did stop the scaly look but after it is wiped off again lips look like as though little blood in them when lubricated and when dried, craky.
No one has suggested such test before,
Thank you for suggesting .
and once again thanks for replying.

Hi.

Peeling of the skin of the lips may be suggestive of a photosensitivity reaction or an infection. It may also suggest the presence of a dermatitic skin condition. Is there any itchiness of the affected area? Is there any pain or bleeding?

This has been present for the past 15 years. You may need to have this assessed by a dermatologist as a topical lip medication may be given here. A lip balm with sunscreen may also help. However, if an infection is present, then this has to be treated first. The scales or the peeled membranes may be microscopically evaluated and cultured to help guide treatment. The presence of a foul odor may be due to a infection.

Has your mom been assessed along this line?
