hair loss

Ive read several articles online about recent studies showing that lifting weights, even just 3 days a week for 45 minutes, can speed the balding process. I'm a 22 yr old male, I have a receding hairline that I'm geneticly predisposed for. It's been depressing me a lot over the past couple years which is one of the main reasons I lift weights. I feel healthier and more confident, but if it's making me lose more hair I wonder if it's even worth it. Please help. Thanks

Hi,

Any kind of stress would be considered a precipitating factor - but the effect of exercise on hair loss has not been confirmed.

I know my receding hair line is due to my genes, it's prominent on both sides of my family. I was just wanting to know if lifting weights can speed up this process? I've heard it can.

Hi,

A number of things can cause excessive hair loss. For example, about 3 or 4 months after an illness or a major surgery, you may suddenly lose a large amount of hair. This hair loss is related to the stress of the illness and is temporary.

Hormonal problems may cause hair loss. If your thyroid gland is overactive or underactive, your hair may fall out. This hair loss usually can be helped by treatment thyroid disease. Hair loss may occur if male or female hormones, known as androgens and estrogens, are out of balance. Correcting the hormone imbalance may stop your hair loss.

This could be seborrhoeic dermatitis. It is a skin disorder affecting the scalp, face, and trunk causing scaly, flaky, itchy, red skin. It particularly affects the sebum-gland rich areas of skin.

Side effects to inflammation may include temporary hair loss. If severe outbreaks are untreated for extended intervals, permanent hair loss may result, because of damage to hair follicles.

Some medicines can cause hair loss. This type of hair loss improves when you stop taking the medicine. Medicines that can cause hair loss include blood thinners (also called anticoagulants), medicines used for gout, medicines used in chemotherapy to treat cancer, vitamin A (if too much is taken), birth control pills and antidepressants.

Certain infections can cause hair loss. Fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss in children. The infection is easily treated with antifungal medicines.

Finally, hair loss may occur as part of an underlying disease, such as lupus or diabetes. Since hair loss may be an early sign of a disease, it is important to find the cause so that it can be treated.

It would be advisable to consult a skin specialist for this and then decide the cause and further plan of management.

yes I know there are plenty of people who lift weights and still have hair, but maybe those people's hair wasn't geneticly predisposed to lose hair. I'm just asking in people who's hair is, will lifting weights speed up the process
