going from pump back to MDI

Just wondering if there's anybody else out there who has switched back to multiple daily injections.  Due to my insurance no longer covering anything pump related, I've decided to switch back after several years of paying out-of-pocket for tubing & reservoirs.  Even with the 20 percent discount that Medtronic has given me, it's been expensive.  My endocrinologist said he sees no problem with it since the newer long lasting insulins don't peak anymore. He's prescribed Toujeo for the long acting.  I'm just a bit scared after 20 yrs. of pumping & doing well on it.

Hi,

I have never pumped, because I can't afford it.  However, I am doing very well on MDI (multiple daily injections) and my last Hba1c was 5.0.

You can also do well.  Key is to do your basal testing to get the rate set right.  You can fnd instructions in the book Using Insulin by John Walsh, or the book  "Think Like A Pancreas" (I can't remember the author).

Also you need to work out your meal time boluses carb:insulin ratios and the correct timing for these.  Also work out how to do corrections to bring sugars down promptly if they are high.

I find that eating a low carb diet also makes things easier to manage (less fast acting insulin = less error margin and far less risk of lows).  lastly, frequent testing as you work things out and as required thereafter (I test about 4 - 6 times a day), will keep things going as they should.

Thanks for the encouragement.  I'm amazed that your last a1c was only a 5.
