A1C 6.0 is this accurate?

Hi all,
I had some annual blood work last week and to my surprise my doctor said im a prediabetic and that my A1C is 6.0. im 27 5'6 175 (muscle). After reviewing my results i found it odd that my A1C is 6.0 and my Glucose level was 84 mg/dl. To add to my suspicion my job made us to blood work last month and my Glucose level was at 80 mg/dL. A1C was not measured on this exam. Do you think I should re-test? This seems strange but then again this is all very new to me. Please any insight would be very helpful.

Hi.  For many people with diabetes, the fasting blood sugar number will be the last to be abnormal.  However the poast eating numbers may be too high.  IF this is the case, if could explain your 'conflicting'.    If you can get a meter (they can be bought fairly cheaply over the counter), you should test your blood sugar 1 1/2 - 2 hours after eating.  Ideally your number will be < 120 (even better if it is in the range of 80 - 100).  Please check and let us know.

If your numbers are high, you should try modifying what you eat to get your numbers down.    IF this doesn't work then you may need meds.  If your numbers post eating are not high, then you need a repeat Hba1c - maybe the initial result was not correct.

The A1c is an average of your levels over 3 months.  the "glucose level"  is a spot check.   and yes get another A1c
