I've had diabetes since i was 11 so
heres my advice

1) make sure the meals he is eating have high protien and fiber......
and meals that are low or moderate in carbs
remember that fat slows the absoiption of sugar

2) Don't keep sugary foods in the house EG Chocolet, sugary ceral, pop tarts ect....

3)try to add excersie into his dialy life sign him up for ti quan do
or get him a pair of rollerblades

4) try to cut back the number of times he eats out or easts fast food
I guess an example would be pack his school lunch instaead of giving him money to eat in the cafeiteria alos try cutting eating out to once a week

5) have him keep a nutrition facts book with the number of carbs callories and fat
of what he is eating try this website as a resorce
http://www.calorieking.com/

6) make sure he takes his blood sugar kit everywhere
with him if he is going out for the weekend remind him to pack his kit

8) have him keep a food journal
of everything he eats durring the day and what time he eats
if he is unmotivated to keep doing this offer an incentive or reward for doing this
for example an allowence or more visits with his friends

9)keep a list of the foods he eats regurlaly as wells as their nutriotion facts

10) try brewing him some cinnomon tea everyday his will help lower his blood sugar

11) keep him on a regualar schedule and make sure he gets enough sleep every night

I am so sorry to hear what you are going through with your son.  I know how hard controlling b.g. can be and how heartbreaking it is as a Mom when our kids feel miserable and end up needing more medical help.

My DS will be 15 this month.  He's been Type 1 for 8.5 years.  He is on an insulin pump, using Novolog.  Does your son do injections or a pump?

My DS eats OK. He eats more junk than I'd like at times, but he's a kid and even his endo says that they are teens, will not make the best food choices and just need to make sure they are taking insulin to cover the carbs.

Maybe his meal bolus or basal amounts of insulin need to be tweaked?  Could he be forgetting to take his insulin, or not taking it at the right time?  I'm asking this because back int he fall, my DS had his b.g.'s all over the place.  Part of the prob was that he was "remember late" to take insulin for what he ate.  So maybe 20-30 minutes after snacking on cookies, he'd take his insulin.  We increased his meal insulin doses, and he's doing better at trying to remember to bolus before he starts eating.
