Juvenile Diabetic and Two Fetal Demises

Hi there,

I have a question for those who are diabetic and have had miscarriages.  I guess I will explain before I ask the question. You see I was 4 months pregnant in March 03.  The pregnancy was uneventful and the baby was developing normally.  Then at my 4 month check up my OB found that my baby had no heart beat.  I then miscarried 4 days later. Again I became pregnant and again this happened at exactly the same time. They measure that the babies had died at 14 weeks along exactly in both pregnancies. My hemaglogin AIC was 5.6 but because the perionantologist was trying to get my fasting morning blood sugars from in the 120 range to the lower ranges I kept having middle of the night low blood sugars as low as 28 at one point in both pregnancies.  I know that high blood sugar can cause a interuterine fetal demise but my question is has anyone heard of it happening with low blood sugars?  I did have high blood pressure with my last loss but not with my first. I am 36 years old and have had 3 children. I did not have any problems when i was pregnant with my first three in fact my blood sugars were actually more higher. I would very much like to conceive and have my 4th child that I so long for. Do you think the low blood sugars may have caused the demises? My OB has suggested Heparin and Prednisone if I get pregnant again dispite all test results coming out negative for any problems. Just thyroid antibodies as I have Hypo Thyroid as well. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas on this could you please reply.  It would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Karen

I would suggest that you consult the new doctor prior to getting pregnant. They might suggest that you change medications or give you advise on how to not have problems before you start.  My sister did that before she got pregnant and if was with that doctor that she had good results.
Good luck.

Thank you for your reply.

I am going to see a different perionantologist next time I get pregnant, so hopefully they can do something to save my babies.

Take Care,

I have not had any of these medications. I am not sure what drugs my sister had used. Neither my sister nor I are diabetic.  I just tried to eat a balanced diet when I was pregnant. My miscarriage they think was related to my thyroid, ( I had a Hoshimoto

Hi,

Thank you for your reply to me question.  I was wondering if you would be willing to answer a few more of my questions regarding you and your sister's losses. Did you take prednisone or heparin to keep the pregnancies and how far along were you when you miscarried?   Mine was a missed miscarriage.  I did see a perinantologist both times and the fetal growth was normal.  They were fine one week and then dead the next weeks check up as i was going to see one doctor or another each week.  Did they do anything special other then control your diet and insulin intake?  Please help as I don't feel that anything is being done while at these specialists to help me from having these babies die inside of me. Any thoughts on why?  All of my tests as to what happened came back normal and my HGAIC was  5.7 so what gives?  I have talked to these doctors and they don't have a clue.  Please if you know anything that would be helpful let me know.

Thank you,

Karen

I am not a physician, but the mom of a diabetic child. I would suggest that you contact a doctor that deals with high-risk pregnancies and knows about diabetes, or is wiling to work hand in hand with your endocrinologist.  I have also had miscarriages along with my sister. We have both found that going to an OB/Gyn that specializes in high-risk pregnancies has helped us carry to full term, our dreams fulfilled in the end. I am sure if you ask your doctor he/ she would recommend someone.

Good luck.
